Goa in December 2026: Christmas, New Year and IFFI by Cab (Day Plans and Airport Tips)

Goa’s peak season runs from late November to New Year, and 2026 starts early: IFFI, the International Film Festival of India, is in Panaji from 20 to 28 November, followed by Christmas and the New Year’s Eve parties. It is the best weather of the year: sunny days, cool evenings and no rain.
It is also when taxis are hardest to find and most expensive, roads near the beaches jam up in the evenings, and parking at Baga, Calangute and Anjuna is close to impossible. This guide covers the key dates for November and December 2026, day plans for North and South Goa, airport transfers from Mopa and Dabolim, and how to get to Goa by cab from Mumbai and Pune.
Goa season 2026: key dates
Event dates are as announced. Check the official IFFI and Goa Tourism notices for final schedules.
Getting around Goa: why a cab with a driver
- Distances are bigger than they look. North Goa beaches to South Goa beaches can be 60 to 70 km.
- Parking near the beaches is very hard in season. A driver drops you at the entrance and waits.
- No drinking and driving worries after a beach dinner or a party.
- Families and groups stay together in one car instead of three scooters.
- Fixed plan, fixed price. No bargaining with a new taxi at every stop.
Our Goa sightseeing cab covers full-day North Goa and South Goa tours with a local driver.
Day 1: North Goa
- Fort Aguada in the morning, before the heat and the crowds.
- Candolim, Calangute and Baga beaches for late morning and lunch.
- Anjuna and the flea market (Wednesday) in the afternoon.
- Chapora Fort for the sunset view over Vagator.
- Dinner at Baga or Anjuna, with the cab waiting to take you back.
Day 2: Old Goa, Panaji and South Goa
- Old Goa churches: Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral, in the morning.
- Panaji: the Fontainhas Latin quarter and Miramar beach. During IFFI, add the festival venues in Panaji.
- Mangeshi temple on the way south.
- Colva, Benaulim or Palolem in South Goa for a quieter beach afternoon.
- Cabo de Rama or the Palolem sunset to end the day.

Day 3 ideas: beyond the beaches
- Dudhsagar Falls: one of India’s tallest waterfalls, on the Goa-Karnataka border. In season the last stretch is by jeep from Collem, so start early.
- Spice plantations near Ponda: a guided walk, a traditional Goan lunch and a short visit to the Ponda temples.
- Divar and Chorao islands: quiet villages reached by the free ferry from Old Goa and Ribandar.
- Butterfly beach and dolphin trips from Palolem in South Goa.
- Sunset river cruise on the Mandovi from Panaji.
Your driver will tell you how far each place is from your hotel, so you can plan a relaxed day instead of spending it on the road.
Practical tips for Goa in season
- Start early. Beaches and forts are pleasant and empty before 10 am.
- Carry sunscreen and water. December afternoons are still hot on the beach.
- Keep some cash. Beach shacks and small shops do not always take cards, and UPI can be slow in crowded areas.
- Respect church dress codes in Old Goa: shoulders and knees covered.
- Swim only at lifeguard-flagged beaches and never after drinking.
Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Goa
Christmas Eve midnight mass at the old churches is a beautiful experience, and the villages are lit with stars and cribs. New Year’s Eve is the biggest party night in India, but also the toughest night to move around:
- Book your New Year’s Eve cab well in advance, ideally when you book your hotel. Taxis on the spot are scarce and very expensive after 10 pm.
- Keep the same car for the whole night: drop at the party, wait, and drive back after midnight.
- Expect jams on the roads to Baga, Calangute, Anjuna and Vagator from 7 pm.
- Agree the pickup point before you go in, away from the main gate where everyone crowds.
Goa airport transfers: Mopa and Dabolim
Goa has two airports. Manohar International Airport at Mopa is in the far north, and Dabolim is in the south near Vasco. Check which airport your flight uses: Mopa to South Goa or Dabolim to North Goa can be a long drive. Book a Goa airport taxi in advance in season; airport queues are long and prices on the spot are high.
Mumbai and Pune to Goa by cab
Driving down makes sense for a family of five or more, or when you want to stop in Kolhapur or the Konkan on the way. Start before 5 am and break the journey for lunch. Book a Mumbai to Goa cab, or see outstation cabs from Pune.
Families, groups and wedding parties
December is also wedding season in Goa. For families of six or seven, book an Innova on rent in Goa. For destination weddings and big groups, a tempo traveller or bus in Goa moves everyone between the hotel, the venue and the airport. For the bride and groom, see luxury car rental in Goa.
Book early for the season
Cars for Christmas week and 31 December are booked out first. Book two to three weeks ahead for those dates. For other festival trips this season, read our Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali 2026 travel guide.
