It is called the Diwali of the gods, and for many people it is the most beautiful night of the year anywhere in India.

It is also the most crowded night in Varanasi. Hotels fill up weeks ahead, boats are booked in advance, and the roads to the ghats are closed to vehicles in the afternoon. The district administration publishes the final programme a few days before, so check the local notice before you go.

Why Dev Deepawali is special

Dev Deepawali comes fifteen days after Diwali. According to tradition, the gods come down to bathe in the Ganga on Kartik Purnima, and the city lights lamps to welcome them. In the morning thousands take a holy dip, and in the evening every ghat, temple and step is lined with diyas. There is a grand Ganga Aarti, fireworks over the river and cultural programmes at several ghats. The best view is from the water, looking back at the lit-up ghats.

Best ghats to see Dev Deepawali

Dashashwamedh Ghat: the main Ganga Aarti and the biggest crowd. Reach very early or watch from a boat.

Assi Ghat: at the southern end, slightly easier to reach and good for families.

Rajghat: at the northern end near Malviya Bridge, with a wide view of the lit ghats.

Panchganga and Manikarnika area: beautiful, but the lanes are narrow and very crowded.

Quieter options: ghats away from Dashashwamedh, such as Kedar or Harishchandra, are still lit and far less crowded.

Boat or ghat: what to expect

A boat ride gives you the classic view of the entire riverfront lit with diyas, away from the crush on the steps. Shared boats and private boats are both available. Prices on Dev Deepawali are much higher than normal, and they rise as the date gets closer, so book early and only with licensed operators. Agree the full price, the boarding ghat and the timing before you pay, and never pay a price that is not fixed in advance.

If you stay on the ghats instead, find your spot by 4:30 pm, keep the family together and agree a meeting point in case someone gets separated.

Road closures: where your cab can drop you

This is the part most visitors do not plan for. On Dev Deepawali the police close the roads leading to the ghats to vehicles from the afternoon. In past years, cars could only reach points such as Godowlia, Lanka (for Assi) or Rajghat, and the rest of the way was on foot.

Tell the driver which ghat you are going to when you book, so he plans the nearest open drop point.

Reach the drop point by 3:30 to 4 pm if you want a good place on the ghats.

Agree the pickup point and time with the driver before you get out. Book a cab in Varanasi for the evening, or a full day with the Kashi darshan cab.

Make it a full day: Kashi darshan before the evening

Since you are in Varanasi, use the morning well:

Early morning: holy dip or a sunrise boat ride, then Kashi Vishwanath darshan (expect long queues on Kartik Purnima).

Late morning: Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple and the Durga temple.

Afternoon: Sarnath, about 10 km away, where the Buddha gave his first sermon. The diyas are lit on the Varanasi ghats from sunset, around 5:15 pm.

Which is the best ghat to see Dev Deepawali?

Dashashwamedh has the main Ganga Aarti but the biggest crowd. Assi and Rajghat are easier for families, and the best overall view is from a boat on the river.

Can a car reach the ghats on Dev Deepawali?

Not all the way. Roads to the ghats are closed to vehicles from the afternoon, and cars usually stop at points such as Godowlia, Lanka or Rajghat. Plan to walk the last 1 to 2 km.

How far is Varanasi from Lucknow by cab?

Varanasi is about 300 km from Lucknow, around 5 to 6 hours by car.

Should I book a boat in advance for Dev Deepawali?

Yes. Boats are booked weeks ahead and prices go up close to the date. Book only with licensed operators and fix the full price, boarding ghat and timing before paying.

Can I combine Dev Deepawali with an Ayodhya trip?

Yes. Ayodhya is about 200 km from Varanasi, a 4 to 5 hour drive, so many families visit Ayodhya the day before or after Dev Deepawali.

Is Dev Deepawali safe for elderly people and children?

Yes, with planning. Watch from a boat or a less crowded ghat, keep children close, and have your cab drop and pick you up at a fixed point.

Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24 November, the full moon of Kartik (Kartik Purnima).
